If you live abroad or are temporarily outside Portugal, you can pay your taxes by direct debit, bank transfer, or, in some cases, MB Way.
Direct Debit
Direct debit (Débito direto) is a service that lets you pay your taxes through a debit authorization on your bank account, registered with the Tax and Customs Authority - AT. You can use direct debit for recurring and one-off tax payments.
Your bank account must be located in a SEPA (Single Euro Payment Area) country.
How to join
You can sign up for direct debit:
- online, on the Portal das Finanças under Débito Debito > Adesão, or
- in person, at a local Tax Office (Serviço de Finanças).
Confirming account ownership
AT must confirm your IBAN in advance.
If your bank account is not Portuguese, you must submit proof of account ownership issued by your bank.

- Begin the process at least 5 working days before the deadline.
Direct debit charges are always preceded by a payment notice (except for self-assessed VAT). The notice includes the amount and the debit date and is sent by SMS or email to the contacts registered on the Portal das Finanças
