You can access all your tax payment obligations on the Portal das Finanças.
How to check your payments
- Log in to Portal das Finanças (Iniciar Sessão)
- Go to
A Minha Área > Pagamentos
- Select one of the following options:

Pagamentos a Decorrer (payment under voluntary collection), or
-
Pagamentos em Falta (payment under tax enforcement)
In this area, you can:
- Check outstanding payments, whether within the deadline or overdue
- Access payment documents and detailed information.
- Pay taxes using by MBWay
Payment methods available
Direct Debit
Direct debit (Débito direto) is a service that lets you pay your taxes through a debit authorization on your bank account, registered with the Tax and Customs Authority - AT. You can use direct debit for recurring and one-off tax payments.
Your bank account must be located in a SEPA (Single Euro Payment Area) country.
How to join
You can sign up for direct debit:
- online, on the Portal das Finanças under
Débito Debito > Adesão, or
- in person, at a local Tax Office (Serviço de Finanças).
Confirming account ownership
AT must confirm your IBAN in advance.
If your bank account is not Portuguese, you must submit proof of account ownership issued by your bank.
You can send this document using one of the following options:

e-balcão:
- Log in to Portal das Finanças (Iniciar Sessão), using your credentials (NIF and password or Digital Mobile Key – CMD)
- Navigate to

Deadlines
To ensure your payment is processed on time:
- if the payment deadline falls within a given month or on the first business day of the following month, you must complete the sign-up process by the 15th of that month (or by the 10th for instalment payments).
- Begin the process at least 5 working days before the deadline.
Direct debit charges are always preceded by a payment notice (except for self-assessed VAT). The notice includes the amount and the debit date and is sent by SMS or email to the contacts registered on the Portal das Finanças.
MB Way
MB Way allows you to pay taxes online, using:
- The Situação Fiscal – Pagamentos app, available on the App Store and Google Play, or
- The Portal das Finanças under
A Minha Área > Pagamentos
You must install and activate the MB Way service. For more information, visit mbway.pt.
ATM
You can pay taxes at any ATM, using the payment reference shown on the tax document.
How to use
- Insert your bank card.
- Select
Pagamentos ao Estado (payments to the State)
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Homebanking
You can pay through your bank's online banking service, using the payment reference on the tax document.
Other payment locations
You may also pay at:
- Tax offices
- Post offices
- Banks
Payment by bank card is recommended.
Important notes:
- Cash payments are limited to EUR 500.
- Payments over EUR 100 000 cannot be made with debit card or MB Way.
- Legal entities must pay taxes electronically, regardless of the payment methods specified in tax legislation.
